His passenger, who had no flying experience, landed the plane and Ken was rushed to the hospital. As a pilot, I had a routine schedule: fly a small group to the Bahamas, then return to Florida with another passenger. I was in disbelief, not only that I'd survived the aneurysm but that Darren had landed the Cessna 208. I still fly the same plane I was in when I had the aneurysm. A lot of things went wrong that day, but more went right, allowing me to continue enjoying my life and to fly another day.

Why AI can’t replace air traffic controllers

In the air traffic control system, everything must meet the highest levels of safety, but not everything goes according to plan. I’m an aerospace engineer who led a National Academies study ordered by Congress about air traffic controller staffing. What air traffic controllers do? The Federal Aviation Administration’s fundamental guidance for the responsibility of air traffic controllers states: “The primary purpose of the air traffic control system is to prevent a collision involving aircraft.” Air traffic controllers are also charged with providing “a safe, orderly and expeditious flow of air traffic” and other services supporting safety, such as helping pilots avoid mountains and other hazardous terrain and hazardous weather, to the extent they can. Researchers are using machine learning to analyze and predict aspects of air traffic and air traffic control, including air traffic flow between cities and air traffic controller behavior.

CNN —A loud bang, a jolt, and cold air whooshing suddenly through the cabin: these were the immediate signs that something was very wrong aboard Alaska Airlines flight 1282, according to one passenger report. As investigators work to determine exactly what caused the incident, we look at what happens when an aircraft experiences a sudden loss of cabin pressure and the risks for those on board. “As the aircraft climbs, the cabin pressure will eventually settle to about 8,000 feet. The flight crew will immediately start working to get the aircraft down to about 10,000 feet, where the air will be breathable. There will also be a massive wind blast as all that pressure in the cabin goes out the hole.

Cessna employee Dwight Bennett works inside of a jet during a tour of the Cessna business jet assembly line at their manufacturing plant in Wichita, Kansas August 14, 2012. REUTERS/Jeff Tuttle/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsNov 28 (Reuters) - Business jet maker Textron (TXT.N) said on Tuesday it would cut 725 jobs as part of its restructuring plan in an attempt to reduce operating expenses, sending its shares up more than 2% after the bell. The restructuring, which is likely to be completed in the first half of 2024, is expected to save nearly $75 million annually, Textron said. Textron's plan would result in a pre-tax special charge of $115 million to $135 million in the fourth quarter. The parent of Cessna business jets said charges related to restructuring and impairment would not impact its full-year financial outlook.

The panel, named by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), released a 52-page report citing problems that included shortages of air traffic controllers, technology issues, outdated systems and dramatic funding needs. It cited aging FAA air traffic control facilities with leaking roofs, broken heating and air conditioning systems and old surveillance radar systems that must soon be replaced at a cost of billions of dollars. A government watchdog report said in June critical air traffic facilities face significant staffing challenges, posing risks to air traffic operations. The FAA said in March it was taking steps to improve air traffic control operations, which are short-staffed. "There is no question that we are seeing too many close calls," the head of the FAA's air traffic organization told employees.

Two jets collided at an airport in Houston on Tuesday when one took off without permission as another was landing, the National Transportation Safety Board said. The safety board said in a statement on Wednesday that a twin-engine Hawker 850XP took off from William P. Hobby Airport, about 10 miles southeast of downtown Houston, as a twin-engine Cessna C510 was landing there. An air traffic controller told the Hawker to line up and wait on the airport’s Runway 22 around 3:20 p.m., the safety board said in a statement on Wednesday. The Hawker then started to take off from Runway 22, and the jet’s wing struck the tail of the Cessna as it was landing on a nearby runway, the agency said. The pilot of the Hawker continued take off from Runway 22 after the collision before returning to the airport.

HOUSTON (AP) — Flights were delayed and canceled Wednesday evening at Houston's William P. Hobby Airport as crews cleaned up after two private jets clipped wings when they were moving on the airfield, officials said. No injuries were reported and the city fire department said there was no risk of fire after the collision around 3:30 p.m. at the airport southeast of downtown. “Due to the debris caused by the accident, the airfield is shut down until further notice,” Hobby Airport said on X. In an update just after 5 p.m., the airport said it diverted 11 flights and canceled four, ABC 13 reported. The money will go toward new safety measures, including automation to alert air traffic controllers about planes that are heading for the wrong runway.

Biden is tapping Michael Whitaker, currently chief commercial officer for Supernal, a Hyundai company developing an electric air vehicle, who served as a deputy FAA administrator under President Barack Obama. "He knows aviation, he knows safety, he knows the FAA and he knows how to manage and modernize large organizations," he said. Part of that can be chalked up to the air traffic controller labor shortages. A government audit released in June found that 77% of critical air traffic control facilities in the US are staffed below the recommended threshold. Staffing shortages "have placed a tremendous amount of strain on air traffic controllers," Rich Santa, president of the National Air Traffic Controllers Association, said in a statement to Insider. "Air traffic controllers are doing an exemplary job in a very difficult situation, but this is not sustainable." In May, Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg told CNN that air traffic control needed 3,000 more workers to be fully staffed.

A Southwest Airlines check-in area sits empty after Southwest Airlines flights resumed following the lifting of a brief nationwide stoppage caused by an internal technical issue, according to the U.S. Federal Aviation Authority (FAA), at Chicago Midway International Airport in Chicago, Illinois, U.S. April 18, 2023. The facility’s automated surface surveillance system alerted the controller about the developing situation and the controller directed the Cessna to discontinue landing. A person briefed on the matter said the initial review shows the Cessna passed over the top of the Southwest airplane by about 100 feet. The controller had cleared the FedEx plane to land and the Southwest plane to depart. The NTSB said the airport surface detection equipment issued an alert, and the air traffic controller gave go-around instructions to the JetBlue flight.
